One of the most important ways parents/guardians and community members can make a meaningful difference for students is by participating on the school council. Under the Education Act, a school council is a collective association designed to advise the principal and the CBE Board of Trustees on matters related to the school. School councils have legislated advisory and decision-making authority defined within the Education Act and the School Councils Regulation. They are different from Parent Societies & Associations, whose main function is to raise funds for the school. You can find more details in the CBE School Council Handbook.

About Our School Council
School Council Standard Operating Principles
Governance: Representative Model, acting like a board of directors to conduct the day-to-day business and reports back to the wider school community two times a year.
Succession: In order to continue to inject fresh ideas to Connaught School, it is imperative to have a new Chair and Vice-Chair on a regular basis. The maximum tenure of a Chair should be 2 years. If no parent comes forward to assume the role of Chair, the Principal will appoint a representative (as per School Council Guidelines). Executive Roles will be voted upon at the AGM in May.
Events:
- Pizza Days
- Popcorn Days
- Clothing Give-a-way
- Teacher appreciation
Any further identified events must be self-funded, and staffed by a volunteer coordinator. Events may be identified by the School Council, parents of Connaught School, or the teachers & staff of Connaught. All noted events are conditional upon raising the appropriate funds.
The School Council will request a suggested donation of $20 per family for the school year, to offset any additional event or activity costs. Monies will be collected by School Council at events during the school year, and receipts will be provided.
Communication to school community: After the pre-scheduled meetings above and any ad hoc meetings, minutes and notifications will be posted on this website. This is a joint responsibility of the Chair and Vice-Chair (to produce the minutes), and the school coordinator (to post the minutes and appropriate messaging to the School Council page of the website).
Minutes: Jointly provided by the Chair and Vice-Chair to the Principal and Teacher representative, within 5 school days of the meeting. Upon approval by the Principal and Teacher, the minutes and any agreed-to messaging will be updated on this page.
Additional scheduled meetings will be announced in response to community and school needs. Any parent or staff of the Connaught School Community may request a meeting, to discuss relevant topics of concern. The Chair, Vice-Chair or other School Council representative will make best efforts to attend all posted CBE/Council of School Council meetings.
Ad Hoc Meetings: At any time deemed appropriate by the Chair or the Principal, a special School Council meeting may be called. The School Council Chair and Vice-Chair will make themselves available at short notice as required, to address any issues, requests, approvals or otherwise from the Principal or designate.
