Illness/Injury

If a student becomes ill or is accidentally injured while at school, the following procedures are followed:

• The school will contact the parent/guardian (or person listed as the emergency contact on the student file) and ask that the student be picked up.
• If the parent or alternate contact person cannot be reached, the student will be made comfortable in the school office until contact is made.
• If the injury or illness is serious, the school will access the appropriate medical system and notify parents/guardians as soon as possible. Please ensure an emergency phone number is provided on the school information sheet.
• If parents or emergency contact cannot be contacted emergency medical services will be called.

Please do not send sick children to school.

Student Medication

Medication of any kind should not be sent to school with students. This includes such items as “Tylenol”, “Advil”, and “Gravol”. Even with “child proof caps” the danger of this medication being taken incorrectly or passed to other children is too high a risk. If a student needs to take “over the counter” and/or prescription medication (including ventolin inhalers) during a school day, a parent or guardian is required to complete the following forms:

Student Health Emergency Response Protocol Form

• This form is to be used when there is a student health issue regarding attention. This includes when there is a request to administer medication. 

Student Health Plan

This form is to be:

• completed if a physical or medical condition may affect the student’s attendance at school
• completed if medication is to be taken at school,
• reviewed and updated annually or sooner if there is a change in the student’s health concern or school registration. 

Office staff will then administer the medication as necessary, according to instructions. Students with severe allergies and who require the use of Epipens must carry the device in a fanny pack at all times. This is to ensure the student’s safety and well-being in the event of an emergency.

Severe Allergies

Parents of students with severe allergies are required to advise the principal and classroom teacher at registration. We must have emergency contact information, a recent photograph, and other information to have appropriate emergency procedures in place.
