The Terry Fox Run at Connaught School
On Thursday, October 19th, students and staff laced up their running shoes for the annual Terry Fox Run.
Each year, schools across Canada participate in the Terry Fox Run to celebrate the memory of Canadian hero Terry Fox. In 1980 Terry Fox was diagnosed with cancer at only 18 years old, and had his leg amputated. To raise money for cancer research, Terry set a goal of running across Canada. He called this run the Marathon of Hope. Unfortunately Terry passed away before he made it across Canada, but his legacy lives on today. Last year, the Terry Fox Foundation has raised and invested 14.1 million dollars in cancer research.
Our Terry Fox Run at Connaught started with a warm-up in the gym, led by our Connaught School Run Club members. We then moved outside, and with a beautiful blue sky overhead and the sun shining, we began running. Students counted their laps on their fingers as the Run Club cheered them on.
Our school goal this year was to raise $500.00. The Calgary Flames generously offered to match our donation. In total, we passed our school goal, raising $697.15! With the Calgary Flames matching it, we were able to donate a total of $1382.30 to cancer research this year.
Great job Connaught School!
